State Health Alliance for Records Exchange (SHARE)

What is SHARE?

Many physicians, pharmacies and hospitals in Arkansas depend on faxing or mailing paper health records to each other—if they communicate at all. As a result, the numerous health care providers who treat a single patient (primary care physician, cardiologist and dermatologist, for example) rarely have access to holistic patient data or have all the health information they need to provide the best care possible.

The Arkansas State Health Alliance for Records Exchange (SHARE) is a statewide health information exchange (HIE) that solves this problem. SHARE allows primary health care providers, related health services professionals, and public health authorities to access and exchange with each other real-time, electronic patient information that is secure and protected by current federal and state privacy and security laws. Through its implementation and use, SHARE will reduce medical errors and duplicate testing, promote improved management of chronic diseases, and improve patient care coordination among unaffiliated health care providers.

Participating SHARE providers have access to their patients' lab results, immunization records, X-ray reports, medication allergies and other vital information. By viewing health histories in SHARE, health care providers will have more complete medical information to provide high quality care and coordinate treatment with other health care providers.

SHARE offers health care providers three levels of information exchange:

  1. Secure Messaging: Health care providers can send secure, encrypted emails to each other within SHARE containing information about a patient's recent treatment. Secure Messaging takes the place of traditional faxing when a doctor refers a patient to a specialist.
  2. Health Information Exchange (HIE) / Virtual Health Record (VHR): Health care providers can securely access and add structured health data to their patients' electronic health records, including lab results, doctor's notes, diagnosis and treatment plans, prescribed medications and more.
  3. View Only Access: Health care providers can only view their patients' health records.

SHARE Secure Messaging Participating Providers by Location

The map below shows where health care providers using SHARE's Secure Messaging function are located. There are currently more than 2,300 individual Secure Messaging users from about 271 health care locations (hospitals, physician practices, labs, etc.) in Arkansas.
